About this Mentorship

If you’d like more expertise, or are struggling with the human side of behavior consulting, this mentorship is for you. As good as we are at teaching companion animals, our human clients can feel a bit trickier sometimes. This mentorship allows you to focus on this crucial component of behavior consulting.

  • Your cases, your clients and the one-on-one coaching you deserve.
  • Set yourself and your clients up to succeed
  • Set and manage expectations from the start
  • Hook clients on training, keep them engaged, and help them meet and exceed their goals.
  • Review actual cases: what worked, what didn't, and how to stay sane on the tough ones!
  • When is it best to fire a client (and how) ?
  • When is keeping a difficult client the better option?
  • How clients can become long-term income and success stories.

Michael Baugh, CDBC, CPDT-KSA, KPA-CTP

Michael Baugh helps families with dogs who are fearful, unruly, and sometimes bite. He founded North Coast Dogs in Cleveland, OH in 1999 and Michael’s Dogs in Houston, TX in 2008.

Over the years Michael has been bitten a few times by dogs. Humans, though, have snapped at him countless times. He’s arrived at client’s houses where no one answered; he’s worked with clients who were drunk during consults, who argue during consults and one couple who broke up mid session. Michael also once took a sippy cup to the head thrown at him by a 3-year old girl. Several of his clients over the years have euthanized and “gotten rid of” their dogs without his permission.

Michael has a bachelor’s degree in communication with a secondary concentration in psychology. He took graduate studies in community counseling for the specific purpose of learning to work more effectively with human clients. Michael is a graduate of the SFSPCA Academy for Dog Trainers and Karen Pryor Academy. He’s an eager and unabashed learner.

Michael lives in Houston, Texas with his husband and two senior dogs. He meditates, reads, exercises, and enjoys chocolate in equal measure. He has been a human being his entire life.

About IAABC Mentorships

Each 8-week mentorship provides mentees with ongoing online chat, video exchanges, documentation, links, and scheduled weekly live chats via video meeting.

Mentees can discuss their own cases or any others, ask questions about application and theory, ask for tips and advice on overcoming specific challenges, and be guided toward even higher levels of professionalism and effectiveness. The mentors are there for the mentees, and offer all help and discussion that each mentee finds useful.

Auditing is also available Auditors may observe and learn about topics under discussion between the mentor and full mentees. Auditors do not attend the weekly live chats, may not introduce their own cases or ask for specific input on their own work. Auditors may participate in ongoing topics and discussions, and their questions will be answered if time allows. Auditing is simply an opportunity to observe and learn from the mentees' and mentors' experiences.
